(There are two versions of this traditional sung by The Kingston Trio.
In the second version the vocals of the 3rd and 4th chorus have been
swapped. Also the lead vocal seems to sound somewhat older than in the
first version :-).

미국의 고전 민요 포크송으로 1958년 킹스턴 트리오의 레코드가 전미 1위곡으로 대히트하여

밀리언 셀라를 기록 되면서 대중적인 음악으로 자리하게 된다.

이덕에 킹스턴도 순식간에 스타로 떠오르게 되었다.

 

학생들을 중심으로 한 모던 포크송 운동의 막을 올린것이다.

락앤롤의 강렬한 육체성의 자극외에 젊은이들은 사회적 비판이나 풍자 등 사상성 있는 노래도

원 하고 있었던 것이고 모던 포크가 그들의 마음을 사로잡은 것은 당연하다고 할수있다.

 

킹스턴 트리오에게 영향을 준 위버스,벌 아이브스,우디거슬리,해리 벨라폰테 등

포크 가수의 존재가 컸다.

흑인인 해리 벨라폰테는 1956년 '자마이카여 안녕' 1957년 '바나나보트 데이오' 를 크게 히트시켜

칼립소붐을 일으켰고 풍자성이 있는 칼립소는 본고장인 서인도 제도의 트리니다드 토바코나 자메이카

이고 킹스턴 트리오의 이름은 자메이카의 수도 킹스턴에서 따온 것이다...

 

노래의 주인공 탐둘리(실제는 탐 C 듈라)는 노스 캐롤라이나의 젊은 피들러 인데 남북전쟁때

출정한 동안에 연인의 마음이 변한것을 알고 격분 그녀를 죽이고 연적인 그레이슨에게 붙잡혀
